Discussion of our current understanding of the effect of periodontal disease on adverse pregnancy outcomes. The association of periodontal disease as a risk factor for pregnancy complications. Chronic oral, gram negative infection can effect up to 40% of women of child bearing age. The Oral Conditions and Pregnancy Study is discussed in detail. Fetal immunoglobulins are discussed in their relation to preterm labor. Dr. Boggess is an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
